MACHU PICCHU — ‘Reading Drunk’ (2011)

Celestial source of psychedelic folk Machu Picchu has released a new song, entitled ‘Reading Drunk.’ As you might suspect, the song is based off of the experience of reading things while intoxicated, ‘letting the words tumble over each other, swim around and take [you] off in different tangents.’

If absorbing literature while imbibing alcohol doesn’t sound like your kind of thing, sink yourself into ‘Reading Drunk.’ It’s a laid-back track with echoey beats that seem to come out of a twilight fog. The guitar is silky smooth and airy with reverb, accented by shiny synthesizers that slither their way through the aura of the song.

‘Reading Drunk’ can be streamed / downloaded at Machu Picchu’s Bandcamp.

THERAPIES SON — “Still I Call” (Over the Sea, 2011)

“Still I Call” is a track off of Therapies Son’s new album, Over the Sea. It shimmers with its bouncy keys and driving bass lines, all with a glimmer of theatrical drama. Therapies Son is Alex Jacob, who wrote/recorded/performed all of the songs found on Over the Sea - his vocals are airy and immediately enthralling, pulling the listener to the heights of technicolor clouds.

Give Over the Sea a listen on Therapies Son’s Bandcamp and if you like it, download it for $2.99 or buy the vinyl for just $10.

OUPA — Forget (Forget, 2011)

Somehow I missed this track in my inbox, but finally gave it a listen today on Altered Zones. Oupa is Daniel Blumberg of Yuck’s solo project, and he’s set to release his debut LP, Forget, as such in June. “Forget” is a tragic piano ballad that is absolutely beautiful in its reverberant barrenness.

DEAD GAZE — Fishing With Robert (Somewhere Else 7”, 2011)

Mississippi-based artist Dead Gaze (aka Cole Furlow) makes totally tripped out pop jams that sound like they’ve captured the aquatic bubbling of a Mississippi creek. Fuzzy vocals ripple out from the wash of shiny synthesizers, sunny guitar and more traditional sounding percussive elements. The 7” also features really great collage artwork by Jheri, of the phenomenal Get Off The Coast.

Dead Gaze’s new 7” record is out on French labels Atelier Ciseaux and La Station Radar. You can listen to the entire 7” for free via Soundcloud.

HOUSE OF WOLVES — “50’s” (Fold in the Wind, 2011)

House of Wolves is Rey Villalobos’ solo project, which is set to release its debut album, Fold in the Wind, later this Spring. “50’s” is a soft tune that shines like a setting sun on a summer day. Distant trumpet wraps lightly around the warm strumming of a guitar while jangly percussion rings from below, all layered under Villalobos’ gentle, somewhat haunting, voice. The result is a devastatingly tender folk-pop song laced with poignant, heartfelt emotion.

Fold in the Wind can be streamed at House of Wolves’ Bandcamp right now.

WORK DRUGS — “Sunset Junction” (March 5, 2011)

You can almost feel this new Work Drugs song, “Sunset Junction,” coursing through your veins, slowly lulling you into a deep state of sedation. Waves of calmness run through your body as the smooth guitar licks wash over you and the hazy vocals melt your senses down to a puddle of ocean water.

“Sunset Junction” can be downloaded for free from Work Drugs’ Soundcloud page.

Karin makes soundtracks for nightmares, this new song for Red Riding Hood being no exception. The spooky wailing and the screeching electronics are enough to send you into a fit of terror.

Let’s hope that the fact Fever Ray contributed a song to this movie means that the ‘Fever Ray’ moniker is not to be put to rest anytime soon.

A new Fever Ray song titled The Wolf appears in the upcoming Red Riding Hood movie. Equally haunting as anything else Karin touches.

MOTEL BEDS — “I’ve Been Waiting” (2011)

Motel Beds sent out their monthly newsletter with this mellow tune attached. It’s a nicely polished longing-for-love song, wistful and hopelessly romantic.

Give it a listen.

GANG GANG DANCE — “Glass Jar” (Eye Contact, 2011)

Once this new Gang Gang Dance track takes off, it really does, blasting you right into a neon bright world of cosmic bliss. At 11 minutes long, it’s immense and sprawling but the intro works to build the tension and excitement for lift off. Seeing as this is track 1 off the new album, Eye Contact, I think it’s safe to say that this album is going to be huge.

Eye Contact is out May 10 via 4AD.

NASH SMITH & GANGES — “Hunters” (Nash Smith & Ganges EP, 2011)

I’ve taken much too long to get a song by Nash Smith & Ganges up, but better late than never right? Coming out of Blacksburg, Virginia, the band is kind of a collective, combining the various influences of each member into one beautiful sound. There’s something of a southern, lo-fi rock sound and definitely a psychedelic tinge to the songs, creating a folky psych-rock vibe that is sometimes similar to Beach House (especially the vocals) or the haunting tunes of Timber Timbre. Hints of electronic experimentation add subtle undercurrents of electricity to the songs, creating lush, warm textures throughout.

The EP was recorded in a 100-year-old general store turned restaurant in a town hidden away in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The group achieved the wonderful reverb on all of the vocals and instruments by recording everything live.

You can stream the whole EP on Nash Smith & Ganges’ Soundcloud now. Keep an eye out for a new track from the band in late May.
