WELCOME TO THE MIDDLE EAST — Mixtape
Before I started blogging about music, I always assumed that all of the ‘good music’ was made in magical faraway places like California and New York and that Virginia and DC were only good for country music or hip hop, neither of which are my favorites. As I began to explore the music blog-world, I began to discover that there was actually a lot of great music coming out of places very nearby — Richmond, DC, even Blacksburg and Charlottesville. So the aim for this mixtape is to shine a little light on all my favorite artists making really great music in my own backyard.
Anyway, the name of the mixtape is a little bit of a play on the location from which all of this music comes from, somewhere in the middle of the Eastern seaboard - Virginia. So without further ado…

AWD CASTLES & NEON WAVES PRESENT…

George from AWD CASTLES contacted me a while ago asking if I wanted to help with a mixtape he had dreamed up. I contributed a few songs, we bounced some ideas back and forth, and this is the excellent playlist we ended up with. It’s a journey on a cloud of musique noir through the 80s. I’m honored to have been a part of this great mixtape and I highly encourage you all download and give it a listen!

awdcastles:

AWD CASTLES and NEON WAVES present…

A mixtape, harmony-driven, that has taken on a decade which has been increasingly becoming the center of influence around many up & coming artists. At first, the idea came from a show that built its entire performance on an a certain atmosphere and if this atmosphere wasn’t reached, the performance wouldn’t be complete. The idea led into this influence, expanding it past this atmosphere and into this concept.

Abstract:
Satisfyingly adrift, nowhere to be found, and soon to grow tired of this wayward way. Beginning to dig away through every trace, we are led into circles, intangible, and so we never cross paths. Paths that bridge a familiarity and so it seems there’s no need to worry. That’s it though, we aren’t here for the paths, only our harbor. Stringing it all together, we’ve come up with this and once it’s connected, there’s a moment where it’s as if we have finally been found. Maybe if we listen again, we’ll be able to find our way for good.

September 2010 Mix
This is a mix I made for a friend, part of our new letter-writing thing - I’m posting it here for you to enjoy as well, if you wish.
I wanted to make my letter a little more interesting and naturally the first thing that came to mind was to include a CD full of songs, old and new from a wide array of genres, that I love. I wanted some sort of theme so that the mix would seem cohesive and flow, and given the time of year and how it’s my favorite season and all, I ended up deciding on a Fall theme.
My first thought was to go 100% folk but then I realized I have certain songs and artists that aren’t folksy at all but I definitely associate with these orange and red months coming up. However, these songs also happen to be a little more electronic-based, which I consider to be more Winter, so I thought, “Why not put them at the end, like a natural progression from Fall to Winter?” So that’s what I did.
Sorry for a less than original name. :(
September 2010 Mix Tracklist:
Epilogue - Patrick Wolf
Wolf Song - Patrick Wolf
Sprout and the Bean - Joanna Newsom
Keep the Dog Quiet - Owen Pallett
Futile Devices - Sufjan Stevens
Storm - Jose Gonzalez
Stick With Me Baby - Robert Plant, Alison Krauss
Keep It Quiet - Ra Ra Riot
Screens - Animal Collective
House of Cards - Radiohead
Home - Glasser
Despicable Dogs - Small Black
Chinatown - Wild Nothing
Mercy Street - Fever Ray
You Can Count On Me [Live] - Panda Bear

Everything should be tagged correctly, so just unzip and drag-drop into iTunes and you’re ready to go! I hope it sounds as much like Autumn to you as it does to me, but most importantly I hope you enjoy!
Download the mix.
Also remember that all of the songs here are for your entertainment, but if you do enjoy them, think about supporting the artists somehow!

Neon Waves’ 1st Mixtape: Gradient Summer
So this mixtape was born out of a playlist I made for a road trip last month and eventually kept adding and removing from… So some of the songs are a little old, some are very old, and some are new. Some are popular, some not so well known. Ignoring all of that, it’s just a collection of songs that have become the soundtrack to my summer so far.
