MICHAEL COLLINS — LIKE THIS BEFORE (Violet Flame, 2011)

Michael Collins, formerly of Prince Rama, played in Blacksburg last weekend but I was unfortunately unable to attend. Luckily, my friends were able to be there and got a chance to pick up one of his cassette tapes (which are awesome and filled with lavender and holographic cards.) After listening to a little bit of the tape, I found his Bandcamp and downloaded the album, Violet Flame, and I’m hooked.

I especially love this song, “Like This Before” and his cover of The Flirts’ “Helpless (You Took My Love).” All of the music on Violet Flame is an insane mix of post-punk, synthpop, and psychedelia that somehow really comes together into a cohesive sound. I wrote a review of the album for the Collegiate Times, so I’ll post a link to that on Tuesday when it is published on their website.

Download Violet Flame now for free from Michael Collins’ Bandcamp.

Prince Rama creates a cult at Issue Project Room ⇢

From the article:

“Exhaling and clapping hands over head…five, six, seven, eight…we’re all going to make it hotter,” said Taraka half-way through the first performance. People jogged in place, put their arms over their heads, clapped their hands and danced ecstatically. The music was stygian and the room was awash in orange light. “We’re all going to become the flame. Hah! Hah!” It sounded like Taraka and Nimai were in a fire. “Arms up over your head. You are the flame…. Good. Withstand the fire. Five, six, seven, eight…. You’re losing your body…. Burn. Burn. Burn.”

These guys are crazy!

Prince Rama: Om Mane Padme Hum

Animal Collective’s Paw Tracks label has become the definitive source for bizarre, otherworldly music (see: Excepter), so the recent signing of Prince Rama seems like a more than perfect fit.  Hailing from a Hare Krishna commune in Florida, this Brooklyn trio makes heady psych-rock complete with goatskin drums, ritualistic chants and prayer bells.  Their stuff’s certainly not for everyone, but those looking to summon ancient spirits may have found the ideal soundtrack.

Shadow Temple, Prince Rama’s latest LP, is slated for a September release.  Not only was the album recorded in a 135-year old haunted church (as well as Kurt Vonnegut’s grandson’s cabin), but Avey Tare and Deakin aided in the process. Hear opening track “Om Mane Padme Hum” above and head to Prince Rama’s website for more quality material.

Found out about Prince Rama a little while ago, Boy Attractions is entirely right in saying it’s not for everyone and that listening to it is most likely going to attract a bunch of spirits from other realms, possibly even from the moon (!!).

Give it a try though… If you’re into psychedelic music (or maybe drugs? I don’t know) you’ll probably like this a lot. I mean, they used to live on a compound. They’re the real deal.
