LISTEN: Consequence of Sound interview with Hoop Dreams ⇢

In this edition of Audiography, we talk with Hoop Dreams, a relatively new project branching from the same tree that sprung forth indie wunderkinds Wild Nothing and Dream Cop. A five-piece originally comprised of Jeff Haley and Max Brooks of Wild Nothing and Dream Cop’s Tommy Davidson, Jordan Mrazik, and Marcus McDonald, Hoop Dreams filled a void in their local scene when Wild Nothing’s Jack Tatum moved to Savannah, GA. After playing together for a short while, Mrazik left the band to continue his educational pursuits, but not before introducing the idea of adding a violin to the mix.

HOOP DREAMS — Under the Snow (Live at Glasslands, 2011)

via BrooklynVegan

NYC Taper posted up his recording of Hoop Dreams’ set from their show at Glasslands this summer! If you’ve been wanting to hear more from the band since ‘XCPR’, and you’ve already listened to ‘Memory Light’, then you’ll definitely want to hear the nine other songs they play live.

I’ve posted up ‘Under the Snow’  as a little bit of a sample of the quality of the recording, which is actually really good. I know what I’ll be listening to for the rest of the day…

HOOP DREAMS — Memory Light (XCPR 7”, 2011)

Check out ‘Memory Light,’ the B Side to HOOP DREAMS debut single ‘XCPR’ and be sure to pick it up from Captured Tracks or Insound, whichever you prefer. Many thanks to Boy Attractions for throwing this song up!

Give ‘XCPR’ a listen, too.

Hoop Dreams Memory Light

Boy Attractions output has slowed to a trickling halt for the last few days, and for that I’m terribly sorry. We’ve all been tied up with our respective internships/summer nonsense, and bloggin’ has unfortunately taken the backseat. While I’ll admit I’m pretty disconnected from the happenings of Tumblr (as well as the developments in our overflowing inbox), I have gotten to spend some quality time with a few new releases. Hoop DreamsXCPR single (out now on Captured Tracks) is one those releases.

While their name suggests some synth-driven sunny-day fare, this VA group peddles a brand of spare, vaguely haunted indie pop that’s earned them comparisons to The Cure and Joy Division. B-side “Memory Light” certainly smacks of the latter’s influence, navigating corridors of freeze-dried melodies and tense, propulsive rhythms. The flipside’s “XCPR”, which sees the band in full-on jangle pop mode, can be heard on The Line of Best Fit.

HOOP DREAMS — XCPR (2011)

Hoop Dreams - made up of Max Brooks and Jeff Haley (former members of Wild Nothing), Tommy Davidson (Dream Cop), Jordan Mrazik, Julie Shepherd, and Marcus McDonald - is another new band from Blacksburg, VA that’s making some amazing lo-fi tunes in the vein of Wild Nothing, Craft Spells, and Beach Fossils.

‘XCPR’ is a fast-paced, high energy song with an infectious chorus that you’ll definitely find yourself humming hours after listening. The track is the first single off of Hoop Dreams’ forthcoming EP (which I’ve been told will hopefully be ready by mid-May) and will soon have a video to accompany it, directed by Benjamin Brewer.

Check out Hoop Dreams’ Bandcamp and keep an eye out for news on the EP.

INTRODUCING: HOOP DREAMS —- “Home Alone”

Click the little square above to listen to the song from the Dashboard.

Hoop Dreams is a new band out of Blacksburg, VA, a town most notable for the university within its borders, Virginia Tech, and for being the starting place for Wild Nothing. Now we have Hoop Dreams, a band that’s carrying on the fuzzy, sun-glazed nostalgic pop waves.

“Home Alone” is the most polished effort they’ve posted to their Myspace profile so far and shows the great potential these guys have. Haven’t been able to make contact with the band for a proper mp3 to post yet, so please bear with the Myspace embedding in the mean time.

Check out “Home Alone” on their Myspace, and a few other songs of their’s while you’re at it.
