Great new comment on my review of Grimes’ Visions for Virginia Tech’s Collegiate Times:

If I like the way the music sounds, I’ll get it and listen to it. I think almost all of us would agree to this mindset. We consider ourselves open to new sounds, new bands, new genres. Unfortunately, I do not think our music reviewer-in residence shares this mindset. So far, he has only reviewed albums produced by obscure, little-known artists. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but why does he not diversify, reviewing albums from across the musical spectrum? Why does he unfailingly stick to an esoteric niche market, thus allowing perhaps more “mainstream” musical gems to slip by unnoticed? Cool the ideology and the holier-than-thou hipster attitude, log off of pitchfork.com, and showcase a more balanced variety of musical talent.

Pleasantly surprised to come home to find this waiting for me....

We’re so happy to include the sultry funk stylings of this Blacksburg, VA based disco-noir duo. Outlands (Melissa and Mark) lift inspiration from contemporary smooth jazz acts such as Sade and Toni Braxton. Mark summons dense knobs of sauntering bass over hot clouds of steamy synth and bongo flourishes, while Melissa delivers spot-on silken vocal croons, establishing an ideal setting for the seductive pulse of urban jazz clubs. Ariel Pink is at work on two new albums (a collaboration with R. Stevie Moore called Ku Klux Glam and one with Haunted Graffiti called A Death In Hollywood) and a movie that takes place on a 1960s-era werewolf movie set called Bad Vibes.

MOLLY NILSSON — I Hope You Die (History, 2011)

Was turned on to Molly Nilsson’s new album, History, via Gorilla vs Bear a week or two ago and it’s been on repeat ever since. She makes sort of 80s-tinged electronic pop music that, as Rob notes, sounds something like The Knife during their Deep Cuts era. There’s something very nice about the way her vocals contrast the rest of the music.

I don’t understand why she insists on singing with that strange accent when she performs live, and also why she insists on adding seemingly random vocal runs to almost every line of the song. Or why she insists on squeezing in a ‘now’ or ‘lately’ at the end of ‘This is all I think of…’

So far I think her best live performance of ‘Video Games’ was the appearance she did on Jools Holland.
